This picture was taken pretty late in the night...like 3 AM so my security, Eric 'Beefcake', and I look pretty haggard but, hey, I'll take it. The picture is small so you can't tell that my face is on the million dollar bills bursting out of our briefcases. Ohh, you also can't tell that I'm wearing silver shoes. We're the last picture on the slideshow!

http://www3.timeoutny.com/newyork/tonyblog/2009/04/hot-recap-the-brooklyn-bailout/

Source photo is here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/31356424@N08/3456511462

The bills are here:

http://richhorner.com/img/swankskillionaire1.jpg
http://richhorner.com/img/swankskillionaire2.jpg
http://richhorner.com/img/million-dollar-bill-back-rushmore.jpg

The street performers were pretty pissed when we put these in their donation hat :) lol

Tax Inspired Guitar Gear and Misc Sale

Original: http://richhorner.com/for-sale.html

This is your chance

I just found out that I owe the government thousands of dollars in taxes. I hate to sell most of this gear (particularly the guitars and the Grescos!) but I like life on the outside. My tax bill is your chance to own some serious gear.

Roger Gresco Ibanez American Master MA3HH QM CS - $1650

Super rare, hand made in the USA by Roger Gresco for Ibanez, Serial 90055, mahogany body, transparent cherry burst over 5/8ths of an inch thick flame maple top, birdseye maple neck topographically laid thru (the body is a single piece of wood that surrounds the neck instead of the usual two wings), rosewood board, pearl/abalone/pearl split block inlays, Duncan Distortions, Edge licensed Floyd Rose tremolo, silver volume and tone knobs, 5 way switch, cleanest MA you will find anywhere, virtually unplayed, perfect except for some clear coat scratching like pick swirling. I could not even get it show up in the pictures. Comes with original Ibanez American Master hard shell case.

Pictures

Roger Gresco Ibanez American Master MA3HH QM CS - $1125

Super rare, hand made in the USA by Roger Gresco for Ibanez, Serial 90077, mahogany body, transparent cherry burst over 5/8ths of an inch thick flame maple top, birdseye maple neck topographically laid thru (the body is a single piece of wood that surrounds the neck instead of the usual two wings), rosewood board, pearl/abalone/pearl split block inlays, Dimarzio PAF Pro/Double Whammy, Edge licensed Floyd Rose tremolo, silver volume and tone knobs, 5 way switch, player condition. Comes with original Ibanez American Master hard shell case

Pictures

Ibanez 2027X VV 7 String w Piezo Double Edge Trem - $1100

Rare, only made for 1 year, Japanese built, 7 string, mahogany body with maple top, all access neck joint, Double Edge licensed Floyd Rose with low profile and piezo pickups for acoustic tones, some cosmetic damage around the sides, looks great from the front - Ibanez hard shell case

Pictures

Custom Galveston 25 String Triple Neck - $1000

This started as a Galveston 25 string triple neck. I replaced all the hardware though and now it is absolutely sick. The necks are a 6 on bottom, 7 in the middle and a 12 on top. Mahogany body with a gorgeous quilt maple top. Pickups are all Dimarzios and as follows:

6 string: Evolution Neck, Evolution 2 Bridge

7 string: Air Norton 7, Evolution 7

12 string: PAF Pro, Evolution Bridge

There is no pickup switching in the traditional sense. All six humbuckers are wired to the output in parallel. There are three dual concentric potentiometers (one for each neck) so there are 6 volume controls. There are 3 mini toggle switches which put the neck humbuckers out of phase. I built this thing to create the densest sound I could for my feedback system where I would have all three necks and 25 strings vibrating at the same time. Well, it turned out that I had already processed the sound up to pretty much the limits of density and the extra strings didn't sound that much different from a regular 6 string. I don't really have a use for a triple neck guitar and this thing is priced to reflect the limited number of times you would reach for a triple neck. There is a lot of work in this guitar and the electronics alone are worth several hundred dollars. You or your band will IMMEDIATELY get noticed playing this thing. Just ask Rick Nielson. Comes with probably the only case that will accomodate this thing.

Pictures

Epiphone Les Paul Studio Gothic 7 String with Flight Case - $375

Being a strat and tele guy, I've never liked Les Pauls. I bought this one thinking it might be different as a 7 string. I don't hate this guitar like I do most Pauls but I still don't want it. 7 string mahogany neck set into a mahogany body. Gothic black matte finish. Dual alnico humbuckers. Played maybe twice. Like new with stickers and hang tags in a heavy duty flight case. This guitar in no way feels cheap. The workmanship is quality. It's just that is sounds like a Les Paul which, to me, is not desirable. If you like Pauls, this is a steal at $375 with a heavy duty flight case.

Pictures

2001 Fender Standard Fat Stratocaster with maple board and Case - $400

Blizzard Pearl alder body and maple neck with a maple board. Fat strat so it has a humbucker in the bridge. Show room condition which means it's not mint but in that "it was played in the guitar store" condition. There is no damage on the body. I just set it up for 10s and shimmed the neck to make the saddle and pickup heights properly adjustable. The neck pocket says "SEP 15 2001 X29547". Serial number on the headstock is MZ1094490. Gets all kinds of tones you would expect from a strat from funky to country to metal with the humbucker. Comes with hard shell case. Fender just raised their prices so a new one will cost you $550 WITHOUT a case and apparently there is currently a "unusually long shipping delay" on these from Fender. Seriously, Musicians Friend doesn't even have any available. I really dig this guitar and looked all over to find a maple board with a humbucker in a good color like this but I just have too many strats.

Pictures

2006? Fender 60th Anniversary Ash? Telecaster with case - $350

Fender Standard Telecaster. I think this is a 2006 since it says 60th anniversary. The wood looks like ash. Tortoiseshell pickguard. Serial number is MZ6220270. Has the better six adjustable saddle string through the body bridge. There is one chip in the clear coat on the upper side (not on the face) that was filled in less than perfectly. You can't see it unless you look for it. since it's clear coat but it's clearly visible when found. Recently setup for 11s. This guitar gets great jazz, country and metal tones. Comes with hard shell case.

Pictures

VHT 2/90/2 Power Amp G-2902-S - $1200

New, never powered, KT88 98 or 60 watts a side stereo rackmount power amplifier. VHT was just sold and no more real VHT 2/90/2s will be made. These were last going for $1500 new on Musician's Friend. I never powered this one that I bought in April but I do not have the original box as I shipped my 10 year old 2/50/2 in that box when I sold it in December.

Pictures

Tons of Tubes

List is forthcoming.

AKG C 414 B-XLS condenser mics - $650

I have two of these multipattern condenser recording microphones. The B-XLS is the latest model which features multiple selectable pickup patterns, switchable preattenuation pad, shockmounts and carrying cases. These things are as transparent as you can get without buying a $10,000 pair of DPAs. I bought these last year to record a symphony orchestra and it sounded awesome. I have not used them since so I guess they should go. If you want to hear the recording, I'll send it to you no problem. New at Sweetwater or Zzounds they are $1000 each. New at Musician's Friend for $850. Take these two for $1300 ($650/each).

Dunlop Crybaby DCR-1SR Rackmount Wah with 2 DCR-1FC Foot Controllers - $425

Total steal on this hard to find unit with an extra foot controller. If you know what this unit is, you know it's the greatest wah ever made. Whether you want that Hendrix or Petrucci or Hammett or any other Dunlop wah sound, it's in here. The Dunlop DCR-1SR is a single rack space wah that can plug in up to 4 DCR-1FC foot controllers at a time so you can wah from any position on a huge stage. The unit itself has 6 selectable wah voicings, 5 band parametric EQ, volume cut/boost, TRUE BYPASS (!) and multiple outputs for splitting dry, wet/buffered and wet/dry signal. New this unit was $600 + $125 for the extra foot controller. It is in great shape. I'm letting it all go for $425.

dbx 1066 Compressor Expander Gate Limiter - $200

This is a recent model dbx 1066 compressor expander gate limiter with XLR jacks. The unit can run in stereo or as two separate mono channels. These go for $400 new. I used this to compress drums a couple times in the studio but I don't have a studio anymore.

Behringer MDX 4600 4 Channel Compressor Expander Gate Limiter - $75

Used on really big drum kits.

Lexicon MPX-100 - $75

Yamaha 01X Digital Mixer - $150

This thing is freakin sweet. It's basically a mini O2R but I think the mLAN firewire ports stopped working so I'm liquidating it. You can still use it as a multibus mixer with built in effects and dynamics processing. Inputs are super quiet!

M-Audio Black Box - $100

Digital modeling amp like a Line 6 POD. Has USB interface to hook up to your computer.

Unloaded Black 4x12 Slant Cab with metal grille and stereo jack - $75

Pictures

Big box of cat5e ethernet cable

A bunch of gigabit speed cable in all manner of lengths. Make offer.

Nice Mahogany? Futon with Mattress - $150

This is a really nice and solid futon frame. It looks like mahogany. I don't know but it's heavy. Has some scratching. I've just been using it as a couch.

Pictures

Pickups

I have a bunch of Dimarzios and stock pickups I pulled out of various guitars. Will post a list later.

Dell UltraSharp 1905FP LCD - $130

This has the rare-ish pivot adjustment which lets you rotate the screen to be verticle. This is always a must have for me to work on tall documents like orchestral scores. I recently bought a 24" so I don't need this anymore.

Metal Shirts

All are size large and $15 unless otherwise stated.

Iron Maiden - The Trooper - new

Meshuggah - Destroy, Erase, Improve - new, accidentally bought 2

Judas Priest - Painkiller - new

Type O Negative - $8

Symphony X - The Odyssey - $10

Moonspell - Irreligious - longsleeve, $8

Sentenced - Down - longsleeve, $8

A couple weeks ago, I went up to Boston to record the wonderful Julia Torgovitskaya aka juliatorgo at Tufts' exceptional new Distler Performance Hall in the Granoff Music Center. I use an incredibly simple, cheap and effective rig to record live to two which consists of 2 AKG C 414 B-XLS microphones, 1 Aphex 207D and an M Audio Microtrack. This allows for pretty transparent and noiseless stereo 24/96 recording for around $2000 which is ideally suited to classical or anything else where you want to capture the true sound that needs no tonal manipulation.

Well, after more than an hour of recording, we were onto Monica's Waltz from Menotti's The Medium (which I must confess I am not fond of) and I started getting intermittent pops on the left channel. I had no idea why as I had never had any problems with this rig and there didn't seem to be any pattern to the pops or correlation with anything we were doing. My only guesses were that the tube in the Aphex was going or the power in the room was problematic as the readout on my power conditioner was up around 122 volts. Thankfully, we managed to get the takes we needed.

A few days later at home I plugged my 207D in and just watched it for a few hours. Sure enough, it eventually started popping randomly on channel 1 despite the fact that nothing was connected to it. I think the problem was that this unit has no cooling and being over volt and racked next to other gear was a recipe for disaster. I opened the unit up to make sure though.

What a mistake that was.

As much as I love this unit, they definitely skimped on the chassis. I have no idea how two of the top plate screws were held in place previously as they do not fit the threads. I can only assume that the less than precisely placed holes on the plate clamped the screws into place by not lining up with the threaded sockets. Well, I think I am correct as one of the screw heads got separated from its body when I forced it in with my Dewalt. This caused the face of the unit to bow rendering the spring on the digital rate selector inoperable.

So now I have to get this screw body out that is not extending beyond the chassis. After about 30 seconds of attempting to rotate it with a false head made out of putty, I opted to instead destroy the plate around the threaded socket with my drill.

I come across a lot of retarded shit everyday in computing. Admittedly, computing is REALLY phuqqing hard and it's unreasonable to expect everyone to be 100% on 100% of the time so some dumb shit is inevitably going to make it into the system. Well, nagios has a broken check_mailq plugin which ALWAYS tells you that the mailq is OK when run with the default settings because it doesn't correctly parse the output from mailq when run as a non-privileged user which is there to tell you that mailq has to be run as a privileged user. So, I thought of three solutions:

1) Add the nagios user to the mail group and then change the permissions on /var/spool.

2) Setup the nagios user to be sudo NOPASSWD for the mailq command or the check_mailq.

3) Make mailq setuid root.

1 may not be the best idea because a process may "fix" the permissions on /var/spool.

2 is kindof a pain in the ass because you have to alter how nagios is calling the plugin.

3 is super easy. It's just a single command:

# chmod u+s `which mailq`

Check out what I found though. This is on CentOS 4.5:

$ ls -lA /usr/bin/mailq
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Sep 18 2007 /usr/bin/mailq -> /etc/alternatives/mta-mailq
$ ls -lA /etc/alternatives/mta-mailq
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Sep 18 2007 /etc/alternatives/mta-mailq -> /usr/bin/mailq.sendmail
$ ls -lA /usr/bin/mailq.sendmail
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Sep 18 2007 /usr/bin/mailq.sendmail -> ../../usr/sbin/sendmail
$ ls -lA /usr/sbin/sendmail
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Sep 18 2007 /usr/sbin/sendmail -> /etc/alternatives/mta
$ ls -lA /etc/alternatives/mta
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Sep 18 2007 /etc/alternatives/mta -> /usr/sbin/sendmail.sendmail
$ ls -lA /usr/sbin/sendmail.sendmail
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root smmsp 746328 May 2 2007 /usr/sbin/sendmail.sendmail

Yeah, uhh, as if that symlinking isn't amusing enough, don't set mailq as setuid root :)

Also, for the developers reading this, I've always hated when a single command has its behavior multiplexed by looking at its call method. /etc/init.d/net.eth0 anyone? Isn't that practice discouraged by the GNU coding standards? Well, if you need a real world reason as to why you shouldn't be doing that in your programs, here you go. Obfuscating what program actually being called might lead to someone accidentally setting their MTA to setuid root because they think they're only chmodding some helper program.

Megadeth are consummate professionals and always an awesome show live. This was no exception. Chris Broderick was on guitar.

Meshuggah are the greatest band playing today. I'm convinced that Nothing will be looked back upon as the great landmark of heavy metal. This was one of the greatest sets I've ever seen even if it was only 45 minutes.

Behemoth were super disappointing. They were way better when I saw them on Gigantour two summers ago in Wisconsin.

Dimmu Borgir had a great set list. MUCH better than when I saw them 5 years ago at the Palladium when they only got around to playing decent tracks during the encore. Their video was SUPER cheesy but most of the crowd looked like they played Warcraft so...

Overkill cancelled.

I missed Arsis because the schedule was completely changed on Saturday due to Overkill cancelling. I was not happy about this. Good thing I've seen them a ton of times already.

Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza were nowhere near as good as they are on disc.

The Pagan Fest bands were all pretty terrible but after Eluveitie, who were unlistenable, I had a really great time in the pit as there were no spin kick ninjas to be found.

Divine Heresy cancelled.

I missed Unexpect and Veil of Maya because they both played too early.

Disfear played a one-off show Saturday night that harkened the old days of 80s thrash - unreal.

I stayed with Jason from IKILLYA and hung with HUNG all weekend which was good times.

I met Aub Driver who is an amazing guy and is going to put me in touch with Ballet Deviare to discuss doing a piece for them.

I had lunch with Iann Robinson which was great. He's really cool and also thinks that Metalocalypse is not funny.

I saw Derrik Albertelli, Jeremy Saffer, Dani (who made it a point to tell everyone she introduced me to that I'm a musical genius. Thanks, Dani! lol), Genaro (Goomer), Casey Sabol and Kyle Rose.

Met Kim, Caitlin (who were hilariously awesome) and some of their friends, Kyle's brother and bunch of people who thought my Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck shirt was the best of the entire fest. I'm inclined to agree :)

In other news, I bought 4 guitars and a VHT 2/90/2 last week. I'll post pictures.

Kayo Dot Recording

I recorded one of Kayo Dot's new songs with them in my studio last night. It was awesome.

For those of you who are unaware, Kayo Dot are a large (as amplified ensembles go) avant-garde group that grew out of Maudlin of the Well and are now signed to John Zorn's label Tzadik. They are one of the very few bands currently making music that I think is worth listening to.

It was crazily cramped as the new production facility I'm putting together with Steve, while progressing nicely, is not yet finished.

In other news, I will finish mixing and mastering my ground breaking 50 minute hyper-dense spectral piece, Peabodrone, in both stereo and quad versions within the next two weeks. I've been asked to give a preview performance of it at Peabody so keep an eye out for that if you're interested.
